High school basketball seasons come down to one game when the area tournaments roll around.
Homewood High School's boys and girls basketball teams won Class 6A, Area 9, and are now afforded the opportunity to host those area tournaments, where they will be the top seeds.
The girls tournament gets started on Tuesday, Feb. 9, as the Lady Patriots host Pelham at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will take on either Briarwood Christian or John Carroll in the championship game on Wednesday, also at 6 p.m.
The boys tournament begins on Thursday, as Homewood plays John Carroll at 6 p.m. The winner will play in the area title game on Saturday, at 5 p.m. against the winner of Pelham and Briarwood Christian.
In high school basketball, teams qualify for the postseason by finishing in the top two of their respective area tournaments. So, the formula is simple. Win the first game of the area tournament, and the Patriots are in the playoffs. Lose, and the season is over.
