All eyes were on 5-year-old Kiera Bailey on Friday night as she received a cluster of "Frozen" balloons and a Minnie Mouse headband. Through Make-A-Wish and Zoe's Kitchen in SoHo, Kiera and her family are leaving for Disney World Monday morning.
Kiera's mother, Adrienne Bailey, said her daughter is shy but loves animals, books, Legos and Disney movies. Kiera has neuroblastoma, a cancer that affects nerve cells in the body. Her mother said that they chose Disney as their Make-A-Wish request to give Kiera the chance to see all the Disney princesses and a number of different creatures at Animal Kingdom.
The wish reveal at Zoe's on Nov. 20 included a Mickey Mouse cake and a chocolate cake for Kiera to blow out the candles. Her family and the SoHo Zoe's staff gathered with Kiera to celebrate the trip to Disney.
Lindsey Miller, the Zoe's regional operator for Birmingham and Huntsville, said her stores became involved with Make-A-Wish about six months ago.
"We knew immediately that it was something to get involved with," Miller said.
The Birmingham, Huntsville and Tuscaloosa Zoe's locations held a fundraising day on Oct. 5, with a portion of their sales going to Make-A-Wish. Miller said they raised $5,200, and Make-A-Wish matched them with Kiera.
Miller said the Zoe's staff was excited to participate in sending Kiera and her family to Disney World.
"That's something little kids love to do," Miller said.
