Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church Pastor Rev. Msgr. Martin Muller carries the monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament at the start of the anniversary celebration.
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration continues at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church as the parish celebrates the 26th anniversary of the devotion.
Several hundred people gathered on Aug. 18 to mark the milestone. The celebration began with an open-air procession of the Blessed Sacrament, from the Chapel of Our Savior to the church, by OLS Rev. Msgr. Martin Muller and the Knights of Columbus leading as the Honor Guard. Benediction was followed by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
The sanctuary displayed 315 red roses representing each committed adorer. Five white roses represented those committed adorers who have died since the last anniversary. Also among the roses was a portrait of the late Bishop Emeritus David Foley, who kept a holy hour.
In addition to committed adorers and their substitutes, 7,631 people visited the chapel during the past year from the countries of Belize, Cameroon, Colombia, India, Mexico and Spain. Adorers also came from various local parishes, Alabama cities, other states and Puerto Rico. Books bearing the names and petitions of adorers and visitors were brought forward with the bread and wine during the offertory.
After Mass, committed adorers, substitutes and families enjoyed fellowship during a catered appreciation banquet in the Family Life Center.
In 1981 Pope John Paul II established Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration at St. Peter’s Basilica and urged parishes to do so. Perpetual Adoration at OLS was founded by parishioners Mary Claire Brouillette and the late Ida Wilker. OLS is one of about 1,000 parishes in the United States that has the devotion.
