On Nov. 27, members of the community congregated atop the hill on 18th Street to witness the first lighting of the season for the Homewood star.
Heralded as the start of the holidays in Homewood, the lighting is the first since the star's 2011 rededication and attracted more than 50 residents and city representatives.
The event, sponsored by the Homewood Chamber of Commerce and LAH Realty, was designed to celebrate the star and its heritage. Since the early 1950s, the 20-foot, 200-pound icon has been raised annually on 18th Street and is now a seasonal representation of Homewood.
The star lighting ceremony featured live Christmas music played by a Homewood High School Band ensemble. O’Henry’s Coffee also introduced its new “Homewood Star” blend at the event, which owner Randy Adamy said was created to show appreciation for Homewood residents and promote the city as a holiday destination. Adamy said the blend would be available through Dec. 31.
