Homewood Central Park was glowing Saturday night as Community Grief Support held its third-annual Memory Lights: A Walk to Remember event.
The “leisure walk” through the park, hosted by CGS’s junior board, was held to both get the community together for a time of remembrance as well as bring attention to the group’s mission of offering free grief support.
“The main purpose of this is just to raise awareness,” junior board chairman and event organizer Erin Slaughter said.
Around 120 community members participated in the event. In addition to the walk, guests enjoyed live music, sweet treats from Doodles Homemade Sorbets and Ices and food from Jim ‘N Nick’s barbecue.
The group held a moment of silence and released glowing balloons to honor lost loved ones, and had an additional moment honoring those lost in the mass shooting in Orlando on June 12.
Slaughter said the junior board hopes that Memory Lights and its other events will continue to raise awareness about the need for grief support for adults and the services that CGS provides. CGS offers no-cost group support for adults experiencing loss and grief around the greater Birmingham area.
