Homewood is coming out to support the Burgess family’s fight against cancer.
A Stamp Out Sarcoma Stadium Fest will be held at Waldrop Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. to support Edgewood Elementary teacher Shannon Burgess and her family. The event will feature a two-mile run/walk and family festival.
The Indian Summer, a band of HHS seniors and college freshmen, will provide live music at the event, and there will be food trucks, face painting, a raffle and other activities.
In the fall of 2014, Burgess was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer typically found in adolescents. She has undergone rounds of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the initial tumor in her hip, and spent time away from her family at MD Anderson in Houston.
Burgess’ husband Bryan teaches at John Carroll Catholic High School and coaches cross-country and track. Their son Wes attends Edgewood and daughter Isabel Homewood Middle School. Their family attends Shades Mountain Baptist Church.
The walk/run is free. Donations will be accepted for the Burgess family at the event.
