The Homewood Police Department celebrated the promotion of six of its officers to the rank of sergeant on Thursday, Oct. 29 with a swearing-in ceremony in the Homewood City Council chambers.
John Carr, Jeff Harris, Steve Hensley, Jeremiah Mote and Justin Self have all took their oaths Thursday, which were administered by Judge Miles Huffstutler. Jimmy King has also been promoted to sergeant, but was unable to attend.
The ceremony included brief remarks by Chief Jim Roberson, who said even though the ceremony was belated for some, he wanted to give the new sergeants and their families a chance to celebrate officially taking their oaths. Four of the new sergeants were pinned in September.
Sgt. Self, who has been with the Homewood Police Department for nine years, said the first few months have been busy.
“It’s been challenging, but it’s also been a fun challenge,” Self said.
He said going from a patrol aspect to a more administrative role has been the biggest challenge
“You’re no longer really where the rubber meets the road, and that’s taken some adjustment,” he said, “but it’s everything I expected so far.”
