This month, the Homewood Historical Association is hosting a program on the history of the Greek community in Birmingham featuring local author Niki Sepsas.
Sepsas’ latest book, released April 2012, is titled Hellenic Heartbeat in the Deep South: A History of the Greek Community in Birmingham, Alabama. It traces the history of Greek immigrants who left their homeland and arrived in Jones Valley in late 19th century.
Sepsas describes these travelers as possessing a love of fine food and hospitality, and his book traces how their fruit and vegetable stands evolved into some of the most revered food in Birmingham.
The Historical Association is presenting the program on Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Homewood Public Library. The event is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
