Birmingham author Carla Jean Whitley will launch her newest book, Birmingham Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the Magic City, at Alabama Booksmith on July 27.
Local author Carla Jean Whitley will launch her newest book, Birmingham Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the Magic City, at Alabama Booksmith on July 27.
The book is a part of The History Press’ American Palate series and explores the history of breweries in the Birmingham area, from 15 years after the city’s founding to some of its newest craft breweries.
“Carla Jean has not only done great reporting and great writing, but has located some wonderful pictures both of the folks who are now in the business and folks who were previously in the business,” said Alabama Booksmith owner Jake Reiss.
The store will have an exclusive hardback copy of the book for sale at the event, said Reiss.
“In this particular case, we had this book bound exclusively for the Alabama Booksmith,” Reiss said. “The publishing house [The History Press] is a very successful operation out of Charleston, South Carolina, and they produce tens of thousands of titles set locally.”
Victoria Boneberg, marketing specialist for Arcadia Publishing and The History Press, said Alabama Booksmith was the perfect fit for the book’s launch.
“We are a local and regional book publishing company, and we love local, so whenever we do events we like to go local first,” Boneberg said.
Whitley will be signing copies of her book from 4-6 p.m., and the book launch will take place from 6-8 p.m. Signed copies of the book will not be the only part of the night, Reiss said.
“Carla Jean has a group of fans who are bringing refreshments, so that always makes a books signing more fun,” Reiss said.
Anyone who cannot make it to the event can pick up a signed copy at a later date, or they can have a signed copy personalized by ordering the book in advance. The hardback version costs $27.99.
