Barbara Wheeler started her career as a real estate agent 40 years ago, and she’s consistently remained in the top 10% of real estate agents statewide.
Today, she’s sharing some of her expertise for anyone in the market looking to buy or sell a home.
Location Matters
When choosing between budget and your new home wish list, Wheeler advises buyers to think of a home as an investment as well as a safe haven for their families.
With that in mind, location is a big aspect to consider. Think of the reputation of the area, the school district and the state of the homes around your prospective purchase. “Even if you get a great deal, an undesirable location can hurt you on your resale,” she said.
Get an Inspection Early
“Having an inspection is imperative unless you are extremely handy,” she said.
Fixer-uppers still have their place, especially if you’ve found an area that you truly enjoy. “If a house has good bones and you have the money, time and/or talent, it can be wonderful to transform a house,” she said. “But, unless you’re very handy, the condition of the home can be costly for you when you actually take possession.”
Work with an Agent
“Buyers need to work with an agent who knows the market and knows how to get their offer on the top of the pile,” Barbara said. “The reputation of that agent is important.”
