to
Saturn Birmingham 200 41st Street South, Birmingham, Alabama 35222
In honor of National Homeless Awareness Week, the One Roof Junior Board invites you to join us for a screening of The Homestretch, an award-winning documentary that follows three youths growing up and navigating homelessness in Chicago. The screening will be followed by raffles, awesome prizes, and an interactive simulation of youth homelessness. This event will be cohosted by Birmingham’s own Paul Janeway of St. Paul and the Broken Bones.
THE FILM
“The Homestretch follows three homeless teens as they fight to stay in school, graduate, and create a new life. Each of these smart, ambitious youths — Roque, Kasey, and Anthony — will surprise, inspire, and challenge audiences to rethink stereotypes of homelessness as they work to complete their educations while facing the trauma of being alone and abandoned at an early age. While told through a personal perspective, their stories connect with larger issues of poverty, race, juvenile justice, immigration, foster care, and LGBTQ rights.” -PBS.org
THE ISSUE
On any given night in greater Birmingham, 110 young people are forced to spend the night on the streets or in emergency shelter. Many of these young people lack support from family, friends, and community. A large number have aged out of foster care with no safety net and ended up with nowhere to call home. One Roof and our partner agencies are working hard to understand and solve the issues that lead to youth homelessness. Now is your chance to get involved and to help make our community a place where young people don’t have to experience homelessness.
One Roof is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting central Alabama to end homelessness. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted.
