Sharon Hamilton Broach is the founding partner of Hamilton Broach Law & Mediation, a law firm specializing in dispute resolution, estate planning and guardian ad litem services. She is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law and practiced civil litigation and mediation at a local firm before embarking upon an 11-year career as a law clerk for U.S. District Court Judges U.W. Clemon and Abdul Kallon.
She said she believes her time at the court was invaluable.
“I gained a lot of insight into how a case is viewed and handled by the court, which is something most lawyers do not have. I also drafted opinions on countless legal topics and have a solid foundation in many areas of the law. That experience gives me a real advantage in my practice,” Broach said.
More importantly, she said, she was able to participate in numerous mediations and settlements ranging from small disputes to the settlement of a $600 million case.
Now back in private practice, Broach said she doesn’t hesitate to attribute her success to not just her legal expertise, but her ability to connect with people on a meaningful level. Although she said she enjoys all aspects of her practice, mediation holds particular appeal.
“Every time I mediate, I get the opportunity to analyze facts and law that are unique to that case, and meet and work with people to help them resolve their differences about matters that may significantly impact their lives,” she said.
Her office, “The Brown House,” provides the perfect environment for conciliation and meeting with clients, Broach said. The reception area boasts a wainscoted fireplace and double French doors leading to a large Southern-style porch overlooking a flower garden and fountain with blooming lily pads. Each conference room is an eclectic mix of cool colors and contemporary art with large sunlit windows and elegant yet comfortable chairs.
“We use the entire office during mediations. My clients are free to enjoy the porch, garden and sun room to make personal phone calls, stretch their legs or just get a change of scenery,” she said.
Broach said she was determined to locate her practice in Homewood, where she also lives with her husband, Anthony. They have two children, Anthony Omar and Alexis. She serves on the board of directors at the YWCA of Central Alabama, Collaborative Solutions, Inc. and College Choice Foundation. She is a member of the Alabama State Bar, Birmingham Bar Association and Magic City Bar Association. She said she enjoys spending time with family and traveling.
