At its annual scholarship awards luncheon, the Rotary Club of Shades Valley presented almost a dozen high school seniors with scholarship money. Ten of the 11 recipients and their families joined the club at its May 2 luncheon at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
The club raises money for these scholarships through a weekly collection at its luncheons, said club president Jacob Erwin.
“Every Monday when we contribute to these yellow bowls, we think about the scholarship recipients,” he said.
John Feagin, chairman of the Educational Foundation of the Rotary Club of Shades Valley, said the club enjoys recognizing and helping all of the seniors who receive scholarships.
“This is always a most enjoyable time, and I think the club enjoys having these guests,” he said.
Each student received a $5,000 scholarship that would be paid in two installments. To apply, students submitted an application, resume, essay and grade transcript. They were also interviewed by a panel of Rotary members, and winners were selected based on scholastic achievement, exceptional character, community involvement and need.
Feagin complimented the recipients, noting their resumes were already filled with clubs, leadership roles and community service.
Of the 11 recipients, two were from Homewood High School, five were from John Carroll Catholic High School, three were from Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School and one was from Shades Valley High School.
