Plans for the Exceptional Foundation’s parking expansion are moving forward
At its Oct. 16 meeting, the city council approved 6-1 an Estoppel Certificate and Landlord’s Agreement for the center’s plans for additional parking.
The council members looked at the drawings that now call for a 15-foot buffer with no entrances from Oxmoor Road. Council member Britt Thames said that residents around the property are now okay with this plan. Council member Walter Jones aid the city’s parking resolution will need to be updated based on the new plan.
Twelve to 13 parking spaces at the community center will be lost during the construction for the new parking area, according to Parks and Recreation Director Berkeley Squires.
Also at the meeting, the council ruled to no longer looking into traffic flow issues in and around Edgewood Elementary School during drop off and pick up times. The Public Safety Committee voted 4 to 0 to recommend dropping this item, and the council voted to do the same at its Oct. 16 meeting.
Additionally, a public hearing to rezone property on 18th Street South from commercial to institutional for parking for the Islamic Academy of Alabama was reset for Dec. 1.
Other council business included:
- Rezoning the property at 1728 26th Avenue South from Attached Dwelling Unit District to Neighborhood Shopping District. This will increase the parking for Larry Mantooth’s property.
- Amending the final development plan for the property at 1659 28th Ave. S.
- Set a public hearing for Oct. 27 for a sign ordinance variation at 185 Oxmoor Road.
- A report from Fred Hawkins about making changes to get all of Homewood into one zip code. Hawkins had met with resident Joanne Brown, who also suggested changing congressional district lines, updating the city website and a reviewing city phone system. The council voted to drop this matter.
- The APPLE intersection traffic study for Roseland Drive was referred back to the Finance Committee.
- A four-way stop intersection at Roseland Drive and E. Glenwood Drive was moved back to the Public Safety Committee until after a traffic study is completed.
- Rejection of a proposal to pay for tree removal at 204 Broadway Street. The property owner, Dorothy Wozny, said city sidewalk repairs damaged the tree roots. The Finance Committee recommended declining the claim per the recommendation of an assessment of the tree.
- Approval of a request to review city employees’ life and long-term disability insurance.
- Approved addressing the drainage work for Express Oil Change at 1717 Central Ave. for Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m.
- Setting a public hearing for Oct. 27 to consider sign ordinance variations at 2790 B.M. Montgomery Street, 3105 Independence Drive and 429 Green Springs Highway, Suite 161.
- Approved placing a lien on 1106 Irving Road for the cost of abatement for $13,642.68. This property declared public nuisance on July 28.
- The mayor was approved to enter into a loan for three purchases: $900,000 for police vehicles, $350,000 for garbage trucks ad $190,000 for a bucket truck.
- Approval for Mayor McBrayer to enter into an agreement with Alabama Power for the installation, power and maintenance of six decorative concrete light poles, with glass acorn lamps for the 800 Block of Saulter Road for a monthly cost of $54.15 each plus taxes.
- Dropping consideration of parking options on South Forest Drive.
- Authorized payment of invoices for Sept. 22-Oct.10.
