Oak Grove Road paving and lighting project
The blue sections of Oak Grove Road are scheduled for repaving this summer. The small red dots on the north and south sides of the street denote where new streetlights will be installed.
A project is being considered to make Oak Grove Road a little brighter with 21 new streetlights.
At its April 6 meeting, the finance committee voted to recommend an agreement with Alabama Power to install and maintain the lights, which will have fluted concrete poles and glass acorn lamps. The committee noted that currently the only lights on Oak Grove Road are in Patriot Park.
The cost to the city would be $1,224.64 per month for the lights’ maintenance. This expense would come out of the street lighting fund.
Ward 2 Place 1 Representative Fred Hawkins said he’s hoping to have the project bid out by the end of April and have construction take place while school is out for the summer. It would be part of a larger repaving project that runs from the Hall Avenue intersection to where Oak Grove Road ends at Oxmoor Road.
“It would be great not to disrupt the school traffic that backs up on this road,” Hawkins said.
The project will come before the full city council for approval during its April 13 meeting.
During the finance meeting, the committee also:
- Recommended approval of a $40,000 agreement with Volkert, Inc. for a five-year pavement management plan. The city would pay $8,000 of this cost and Volkert would train a municipal employee to continue maintenance once the five years are finished.
- Carried over consideration of a personnel study review
- Approved amendments to the fiscal year 2014 and 2015 budgets
- Approved the Homewood Police Department to accept a grant from the Department of Homeland Security for $8,972.15.
- Carried over discussion of a new restaurant on Oak Grove Road. The restaurant would be located in the “triangle building” west of Raleigh Avenue and would include a deli, meat market and beer and wine sales.
